Wire Transfers

How bank wires move money, how long they take, and what can go wrong.

What is a wire transfer?

A wire transfer is an electronic payment sent from one bank to another. Each one moves on its own. Many U.S. wires run on the Federal Reserve's Fedwire service.

Fedwire settles each payment on its own, in real time. That speed and finality suit large or urgent payments. Read more on what a wire transfer is.

How long does a wire transfer take?

A domestic wire often arrives the same business day, if your bank sends it before its cutoff. International wires can take longer.

Fedwire's business day runs from 9:00 p.m. ET the evening before until 7:00 p.m. ET. Your bank's cutoff is usually earlier. The guide to how long a wire transfer takes covers delays.

Can you send a wire transfer on a weekend?

You can usually request one, but it won't settle until the next business day. Weekends and Federal Reserve holidays aren't Fedwire business days.

The Fed announced plans in October 2025 to add Sundays and weekday holidays. That won't happen before 2028.

Can a wire transfer be reversed?

Usually not. The Federal Reserve says Fedwire payments are final and irrevocable once processed.

Your bank can send a return request, but the receiving bank doesn't have to honor it. Getting money back often depends on the recipient agreeing.

What information do I need to send a wire?

Your bank will tell you the exact fields. A domestic wire usually needs these details:

  • Recipient's name: as it appears on the account.
  • Bank details: the receiving bank's name and ABA routing number.
  • Account number: the recipient's account.
  • Amount and reference: plus any purpose details the bank asks for.

International wires often add a SWIFT/BIC code, an IBAN in some countries, and intermediary bank details.

What happens if I send a wire to the wrong account?

Call your bank right away. If the wire hasn't gone out yet, they may be able to stop it.

Once it settles, your bank can only ask for the money back. Recovery isn't guaranteed, so double-check details before you send.

How long does an international wire take?

Longer than a domestic one. Extra banks, currency conversion, and compliance checks all add time.

Citi, for example, says some international wires can take up to five business days. That's one bank's figure, not a rule. Time zones and local holidays can stretch it too.

Are wire transfers safe?

The payment system itself is secure. The bigger risk is paying a scammer, since wires are so hard to undo.

Fraud often starts with a fake email that changes the payment details. Confirm wire instructions by phone, using a number you already trust.

ACH Payments

The network behind payroll, bills, and most bank transfers.

What is an ACH transfer?

An ACH transfer is an electronic payment through the Automated Clearing House Network. It handles payroll, bills, and transfers between bank accounts.

Nacha says the network reaches every U.S. bank and credit union account. The Federal Reserve and The Clearing House are its two operators.

How long does an ACH transfer take?

Most settle within one banking day. Nacha estimates 80% of ACH payments settle in one banking day or less.

ACH credits can settle the same day, the next banking day, or in two banking days. Debits usually settle the same or next banking day.

What is Same Day ACH?

Same Day ACH lets eligible payments settle on the day they're sent. It's growing fast.

Nacha reported 470.4 million Same Day ACH payments in the third quarter of 2026, worth $1.3 trillion. That was up 36.7% from a year earlier.

When does ACH money become available?

A Nacha rule effective September 18, 2026 sets the deadline for regular ACH credits. Banks must release the money by 9:00 a.m. local time on settlement day.

That's earlier than the old rule allowed for some payments. Same Day ACH has its own availability rules.

Do ACH transfers happen on weekends?

No. ACH settles on banking days. A payment sent on a Saturday waits for the next one.

That's why a Friday evening transfer often lands on Monday or Tuesday.

Can an ACH payment be reversed?

Sometimes. ACH rules allow returns for set reasons. Common ones are an unauthorized debit, a closed account, or insufficient funds.

That's not the same as cancelling any payment you like. Consumer accounts also get error protections under Regulation E.

What is the difference between ACH and a wire transfer?

ACH is cheaper and works well for routine payments. Wires are faster and final, which suits large or urgent ones.

How common are ACH payments?

Very common. Nacha says 93% of American workers get paid through the ACH Network. So do 99% of Social Security payments.

In the third quarter of 2026 alone, the network handled 9.3 billion payments worth $25.6 trillion.

Sending Money Abroad

Remittance rights, fees, and what to check before you send.

What is a remittance transfer?

A remittance transfer is an electronic payment a consumer sends to someone in another country. Banks, credit unions, and money transfer companies all offer them.

Federal rules give you specific rights when you send one. They cover disclosures, cancellations, and errors.

Can I cancel an international money transfer?

Usually, if you act fast. The CFPB says you have up to 30 minutes after paying to cancel at no charge.

That window closes if the money has already been picked up or deposited. For transfers scheduled ahead, you can cancel up to three business days before.

What must a provider tell me before I send money abroad?

The provider has to disclose the key costs and timing up front. That includes these details:

  • Fees and taxes: what you'll pay to send.
  • Exchange rate: the rate used for the transfer.
  • Amount delivered: what the recipient should get.
  • Delivery date: when the money will be available.
  • Your rights: how to cancel and report errors.

What if my international transfer never arrives?

Report it to the provider. The CFPB says you have 180 days from the promised delivery date to report an error.

The provider then has to investigate. In some cases, you may get a refund or have the transfer resent.

Why did the recipient get less than I sent?

Fees and the exchange rate both cut into the amount. Your provider charges some fees, and other banks along the way can take a share.

Your disclosure shows the amount the recipient should receive. Compare that number across providers, not just the fee.

Is a remittance the same as a wire transfer?

Not exactly. A wire is a way of moving money between banks. A remittance is any consumer transfer abroad, however it's sent.

So an international wire you send as a consumer can count as a remittance. That's when the CFPB's cancellation and error rights apply.
